In the Beginning |
|
In
the early 1970's the Board of Governors of The Matilda & War Memorial
Hospital was faced with a dilemma to expand and modernise the hospital
or close it down. The estate left by Granville Sharp had long since
run out and the cost of running the hospital far outweighed the income.
A decision was made to keep it going and with it an ambitious building
programme was proposed. The loyal nurses felt there must be something
they could do to help promote "Matilda" as it was fondly referred
to by the staff, and avoid the Hospital being shut down. Ideas were
mulled over in wards and offices. At a special staff meeting, Sister
Joyce Smith, came up with the idea of organising a novelty race. |
