Rules of the Sedan
Chair Race
|
| Teams |
||
Teams consist of a maximum of 9 persons, one of whom must be the passenger and who must remain in the chair throughout the entire Race. Passengers must be over 16 years of age, alive and human. Ladies' and school teams do not have a passenger but must have a weight of at least 10kg firmly attached to the chair (we recommend a bag of rice / container of water). One official cheerleader is optional but shall not touch the chair at any time during the Race. |

| Masters Teams Trophies |
||
| Teams with an average age of 40+ years, with no member younger than 35, compete for the masters' trophies. | ||
| School Teams |
||
| In addition to the rules applying to other teams, all school teams must comprise of both sexes, with a minimum of three males and three females. | ||
| Chairs |
||
| Standard chairs and poles are provided for all teams. No alteration may be made to the standard chair, but weight may be added in the form of decoration, providing the chair is not made any wider. Only two standard poles will be issued to each team. No alteration may be made to the poles other than padding. Slings may be used. All members of the team need not carry the chair at the same time, but all must start the Race together. Substitutes are not allowed. | ||

| Course A: | ||
| Turn left outside Matilda International Hospital gate. Continue around the back of Mount Kellett Road . Cross in front of Vivian Court and continue along the front of Mount Kellett Road to Jardine Bridge. Cross over the bridge to Plunkett Road. Follow the road up past Peak School . Bear left down the hill then turn sharp left on to Peak Road via the slip road. Return to Mount Kellett via Plunkett's Road. Cross Jardine Bridge and return to the main gates of the Hospital along Mount Kellett Road. | ||
| Course B: | ||
Turn left outside Hospital gate. Continue around the back of Mount Kellett Road then along Homestead Road. Turn right at the end and return along Mount Kellett Road to the main gate of the Hospital. |

| Start |
||
| Teams start in pairs. Starting positions are decided by ballot before the Race. If any member of the team puts a foot across the start line before its starting signal, that team shall incur a one minute penalty. | ||
| Finish |
|
|
| The elapsed time shall be determined when the head of the passenger in the chair (or the front frame of the chair itself in the case of schools and ladies teams) crosses the finish line. It is not necessary for all members of the team to be across the line at the finish. Teams must have their allocated chair number attached to the front of the chair in a visible place for the timekeepers otherwise an official time cannot be given. Optional supplementary numbers may be attached to the chair and should be placed on the right hand side. | ||
| Fitness |
||
| Participants MUST be physically fit. Neither Matilda International Hospital nor Sedan Chair Race Committee members accept responsibility for injuries, etc. incurred during practice or the actual Race. | ||
| Running |
||
| Teams shall run on the left unless overtaking. | ||
| Complaints |
||
| Complaints by any team against any other will not be entertained. | ||
| Awards |
||
| No team may win more than one award in any category on the day. | ||
